Design Goals - Monolith Z Concept

· · Members Area post from

I've been thinking about the Z quite a lot in the last few days and the concepts I'm sketching up are getting closer and closer to what soon can be considered prototype-worthy.

Based on the poll and by looking at other Z designs I came up with the following design goals (without going into details of the implementation):

  • SLM, very little post-processing
  • 1st config: Trident drop-in replacement (3 lead screws, unchanged Z motor locations)
  • 2nd config: V2 fixed gantry upgrade path (4 belts, unchanged Z drives, and idlers)
  • 2-in-1 Z arms
  • 3-point kinematic or 4-point with elastic averaging that still allows for length change in XY
  • a controlled amount of XY preload to take out the slack and improve the rigidity regardless of the rail preload, etc
  • pivot points very close to the Z rails

Overall, I'm pretty hyped about the concept because I didn't think there was a chance to have something as unique as the toolhead's layout idea in this short time.
